Sharing a couple cloudscape painting demonstrations to go with our cloud theme for the last Nature Journaling with Steph lesson.

Cloudscape Watercolor Demo

I painted a simple cloudscape using the blotting method, where I used a paper towel to lift up the watercolor wash. I used my brush to blend and soften the clouds.

I completed the painting with a simple prairie landscape.

Make sure to let your painting dry a bit before adding each layer!

Sunset Sky Demo

In this painting, I've used bold colors to depict a sunset. With the sun low in the sky, the clouds are shaded in dark purple with yellow highlights.

I used white gouache to add highlights to the clouds, creating the illusion of the low sun shining from beneath them.

I finished the painting by adding some silhouetted trees to provide perspective.
