Our family celebrates autumn and Halloween to the fullest. Our homeschool lessons are full of fun Halloween nature themes and I’m so pleased to be sharing them with your family!
We’ve selected some fun “spooky” topics. Many of these critters and creatures may be considered creepy or gross but we hope you’ll gain an appreciation for them as an important part of our world. Without them, our ecosystems wouldn’t be healthy and balanced! Everything has its place on our beautiful Earth!
This study is meant for all ages and is meant for families to learn and enjoy together.
Versatile Learning for All Ages!
This guide is designed to be flexible, offering something for everyone. Parents can explore the study with their children, selecting activities that suit their child’s age and skill level. Families can learn together by studying each lesson collaboratively, while older students can work independently to deepen their understanding.
It is open and go! Simply, grab a few of the suggested books from the library, open the Halloween Nature Study, and start learning!
When you order, you’ll receive a 200 page spiral-bound unit study along with digital student pages emailed to you so you can print again and again.
To make your study even more fun, you can add on loose student pages or a Halloween sticker pack. Order multiples if you have more than one child!

Lesson 1: Pumpkins
Pumpkins are a classic symbol of Halloween and fall harvests. Students study pumpkin anatomy, growth, and the life cycle from seed to fruit.
Lesson 2: Ravens
We’ll take inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem The Raven and learn about raven anatomy, how they differ from crows, and introduces Poe’s biography and literary work.
Lesson 3: Bats
Bats are often linked with darkness and vampire legends. Students explore anatomy, nocturnal behavior, echolocation, and cave habitats.
Lesson 4: The Moon
The full moon appears in many Halloween images. Lessons include what a moon is, Earth’s moon Luna, moon phases, and the dark side of the moon.
Lesson 5: Wolves
Wolves feature in fables and folklore, including werewolf stories. Students study wolf anatomy, behavior, habitat, and ecology.
Lesson 6: Owls
Owls carry a sense of mystery. This lesson covers anatomy, life cycles, and pellet dissection to explore diet.
Lesson 7: Spiders
Spiders are classic creepy creatures. Students learn about anatomy, life cycles, and web-building.
Lesson 8: Cats
Cats are often linked with witches and superstition. Lessons include domestic and wild cat anatomy, life cycles, and species around the world.
Lesson 9: Forests
Forests are imagined as enchanted or magical in folklore. Students explore forest habitats, seasonal changes, and deciduous trees.
Lesson 10: Moths
Moths are creatures of the night! They inspire lessons cover anatomy, life cycles, habitat, diet, and comparisons with butterflies.
Lesson 11: Snakes
Snakes are often thought of as creepy and appear in Halloween decor. Students study anatomy, movement, ecology, and safety.
Lesson 12: Vultures
Vultures are linked with the macabre and death but are important to ecosystems. Lessons include anatomy, habitats, life cycle, and ecological roles.
Lesson 13: Crystals & Herbs
No witches spell is complete without her crystals and herbs! Discover the rock cycle, explore crystals and gemstones, and learn about common kitchen herbs.
